The SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES Verification Scheme GmbH (SURE) provides a voluntary certification system, to verify compliance with the sustainability criteria required by the EU Renewable Energy Directive (2018/2001/EC - RED II) for the generation of electricity and heat from biomass. Based on the directive to promote the use of energy from renewable sources, the proportion of bioenergy to cover our future energy needs will increase significantly. The European member states have agreed on criteria, which all economic operators who use biomass or biogas to generate electricity or heat must comply with and document in future. This will ensure that the biomass used for this purpose has been produced sustainably. Voluntary certification systems, such as the SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES Verification Scheme GmbH (SURE), are regarded as an objective and reliable way of documenting compliance with these RED II criteria. To this end, the systems are audited and recognised by the EU Commission to ensure full compliance with the RED II requirements.
This guarantees the high quality and transparency of sustainability certification.
